What is DNS Attacks?

What is a DNS Attack?

This causes the DNS server to spend a significant amount of resources looking up these non-existing domains, which can be very inefficient and result in poor network performance.

A third type of DNS attack involves sending huge amounts of synchronize (SYN) messages to the target, faster than it can respond to them. The result is a large number of half-open connection, which ultimately overloads the server causing it to crash.

These attacks are carried out in a range of ways. They can include sending bursts SYN and ACK to the targeted server. Or spoofing a udp PORT 53, to poison it's cache and direct DNS clients to rogue site. The udp attack on port 53 is especially dangerous because all it takes to poison the cache of DNS clients is to spoof an ID 16 bits long.

It is important to note that a dns attack can be extremely costly. In the IDC 2020 Global DNS Threat Report, financial services companies were cited as the most vulnerable to DNS attacks.

Along with stealing data and causing downtime, these threats also can damage a company's reputation, result in a loss of clients, or cause a cloud service to be unavailable. In most cases, these attacks cannot be reversed, so it is important to prevent them at all cost.

DNS attacks can be used for many other things besides information theft. They can cause massive network failures and disrupt services to millions of people. These attacks are likely to happen when the DNS infrastructure on a targeted site is not protected.
