A server's domain name is a unique address on the Internet that identifies an online site. There are many website names available on the web. These include those in education, commerce, government and entertainment.
The IP address of the website you are trying to reach is determined by typing in a domain into your browser. DNS (Domain Name System) maps alphabetic domains to IP addresses, just like in a phonebook.
DNS operates on a database using a client/server model. Name servers, which are servers within the DNS, are responsible for storing data about each domain as well as its IP address.
How Does DNS Work
The first step in the DNS process is for a computer to ask a specialized computer, called a root server, what IP addresses are associated with each Top Level Domain. Each domain is essentially its own registry, and this registry is stored on a special computer called a root-server.
Once the root server knows what TLD you are looking for, it sends your request to a Domain Name Resolver, which is a computer located within a service provider or organization. These resolvers have a specialization in locating registries and translating domain names into IP addresses.
A DNS query may require different records depending on what is required by the resolver and the domain. The A record contains the IP of the domain. Other records include CNAME, TXT and CNAME/TXT. These can be used for an alias to be created or to forward the DNS query to another DNS Server.
The records are stored in a file called a zone. The DNS zones store data about domains, IP addresses and related information.
The recursive DNS Server receives the question and performs a series or requests to reach the authoritative DNS Name Server for that domain. The recursive DNS servers then returns the IP to the client or the server.
The DNS uses two different types of authoritative names servers, primary and secondary. The primary DNS server is the one that holds copies of the zone files and all the records for the zone. The secondary DNS servers are only used if there are errors in the primary or if the authoritative domain server is not available.
They are the last authority for all names and IPs in a zone. These name servers are also capable of changing the IP address of the zones or domains they manage. They are therefore an important part of maintaining and managing the DNS.
The DNS server repeats the request until it reaches an authoritative DNS nameserver. If the recursive DNS server cannot find what it needs from the authoritative DNS nameserver, it then makes the queries to another DNS nameserver that will get back the information needed. The recursive DNS can also return the IP address of the domain or zone. This is the fastest and most common way to get an IP address from the nameserver.
